The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Eugene J. Malloy (ASN: 42180503), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 15 March 1945, in the vicinity of Hartungshof, Germany. As lead scout in the company, Private First Class Malloy entered the town one hundred yards ahead of the leading elements. Passing the fire house, he was fired on by an enemy machine gun. Armed with a submachine gun and a rifle, he dashed from building to building, firing at the emplacement with the submachine gun until he had worked his way to within thirty-five yards of the enemy. He then fired a grenade into the position, killing the gunner and assistant. This outstanding courage and gallantry on the part of Private First Class Malloy, enabling the company to secure the town, is in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
