The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Leland R. Fiero (ASN: 37600069), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 15 April 1945, in the vicinity of Waldenburg, Germany. When four enemy machine guns opened fire on his platoon, killing and wounding some of the men, Private First Class Fiero, a bazooka man, with utter disregard of personal safety, stood in full view of the enemy and successfully eliminated one of the enemy guns. Noticing one man seriously wounded and lying in an exposed position, he gallantly braved the intense machine gun fire to pick up and carry the wounded man to a place of safety. This heroic act of Private First Class Fiero is in keeping with the finest traditions of the service and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
