The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant John Di Veglia (ASN: 6146221), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 19 April 1945, in the vicinity of Ober Fishach, Germany. While clearing mines on the only supply route to the forward elements, the Ammunition and Pioneer Platoon came under intense enemy fire. Sergeant Di Veglia, on seeing his men imperiled by the fire, located the enemy and crawled under fire to a position from which he threw the grenades, killing two of the enemy and forcing the others to withdraw. His heroic act permitted the completion of the mission. The courage and devotion to duty of Sergeant Di Veglia reflect credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
