The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Frank J. Demario (ASN: 33085400), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 9 April 1945, in the vicinity of Weldingsfeldon, Germany. Sergeant Demario was leading his squad in a platoon attack on the city. Heavy enemy machine gun and small arms fire was directed at them as they advanced. Sergeant Demario led his men into position along a road and then advanced alone on the enemy positions by short rushes. When he had advanced to within twenty-five yards of the enemy machine gun, he was fatally wounded. His men, following his example, left cover and rushed ahead in the face of heavy fire and captured the position. Sergeant Demario’s exemplary leadership and bravery under fire contributed directly to the success of the attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
