The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William D. Lundberg (ASN: 0-550936), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Anti-tank Company, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 9 March 1945, in the vicinity of Bliesransbach, Germany. Lieutenant Lundberg, after heavy nebelwerfer fire had set fire to the platoon command post building in the town, entered the flaming structure to rescue a wounded man. Clearing debris from around the wounded man, he removed him to safety. He re-entered the building and successfully unloaded high explosive anti-tank and rocket ammunition as well as several gasoline cans from a truck which was engulfed in flame. He then assisted men in extinguishing the fire despite the fact that enemy rockets continued to fall around him. Lieutenant Lundberg’s devotion to duty in rescuing the wounded man and saving valuable ammunition displayed gallantry that reflects the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
