Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 305 (June 28, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Willie H. Gainer (ASN: 35376371), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 25 April 1945, in Leipheim, Germany. Corporal Gainer noticed eight of the enemy infiltrating through the town to positions from which they could fire on the defenders from the rear. Although he was greatly outnumbered, Corporal Gainer fired on the enemy group. He was wounded in the ensuing fire fight, but he continued to fire until he had killed all eight of the enemy. Corporal Gainer’s bold and heroic action saved the defending troops from a serious danger within their own lines. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
