The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Arthur H. Clark (ASN: 35240509), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 18 April 1945, in the vicinity of Croffelbach, Germany. Knowing that there were about twenty enemy troops in woods overlooking the objective, Private First Class Clark with eight men voluntarily undertook the capture of them. As the patrol approached, they were seen by the enemy who then attempted to outflank the company. Private First Class Clark, armed with an automatic rifle, ran after them firing his weapon, killing two and wounding three. The ensuing fire fight resulted in the death of Private First Class Clark, but his actions in harassing the enemy’s movements enabled the rest of the patrol to assume positions that forced the surrender of the surviving enemy. The outstanding gallantry in action displayed by Private First Class Clark in the face of great odds reflects the highest credit upon himself and is in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
