Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 282 (June 25, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Richard K. Goldberger (ASN: 0-1178163), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery A, 862d Field Artillery Battalion, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 3 March 1945, in the vicinity of Hartungshof, Germany. Lieutenant Goldberger led a forward observer party and established his observation post in a house that was exposed to mortar and sniper fire from the adjoining house. While directing artillery fire, he assisted the infantry by throwing grenades as they assaulted the adjoining building. As well as accomplishing his mission in a superior manner, he aided the infantry materially throughout the entire fire fight with his sub-machine gun, and during the withdrawal by helping to evacuate the wounded under enemy shell fire. The outstanding gallantry under fire of Lieutenant Goldberger reflects the highest credit upon himself and is in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
