The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert L. Vermillion (ASN: 14057131), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 16 March 1945, in the vicinity of Eleisbach, Germany. When a scout went forward and was severely wounded, Private First Class Vermillion, a bazooka man, acting on his own initiative, raced forward. Although fire from machine guns and grenades burst around him, he continued until he reached the wounded man and pulled him to cover. Again acting on his own initiative, he located the enemy’s firing positions and returned to his platoon, giving them this information. The platoon opened fire and the enemy retreated. Private First Class Vermillion’s magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
