Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 270 (June 19, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Willis H. Sandbrink (ASN: 0-1180032), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery B, 861st Field Artillery Battalion, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 8 April 1945, in the vicinity of Buchhof, Germany. Accompanying the advance elements of Company F during an attack, Lieutenant Sandbrink, an artillery forward observer, repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire in order to observe and direct artillery fire at enemy positions. Although struck down by a severe leg wound, Lieutenant Sandbrink remained under fire for half an hour and continued to perform his duty of providing artillery support for the infantry. Lieutenant Sandbrink’s bravery and devotion to duty under fire reflect credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
