The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Robert E. Click (ASN: 20820802), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 19 March 1945, in the vicinity of Ensheim, Germany. During the attack on the Siegfried Line, a strong enemy force counterattacked Private Click’s position, taking his company by complete surprise and finding it disorganized. Grasping the situation at once, Private Click, a squad leader, disregarding the heavy enemy automatic weapons fire, reorganized the defensive position and kept his gunners supplied with ammunition. When the platoon and section sergeants had been wounded, Private Click assumed command of his platoon and the riflemen around it and led them forward to better firing positions from which they repulsed the counterattack with heavy losses to the enemy. Such bravery and leadership under fire reflect great credit upon Private Click and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
