The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Ralph W. Dickson (ASN: 37490514), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 8 April 1945, in the vicinity of Tiffenbach, Germany. While moving ammunition to a forward dump, six men were subjected to heavy enemy mortar fire. One of the men was badly hit as he attempted to leave his jeep. The remainder of the men placed the ammunition under cover of a building. Private First Class Dickson then left cover and crawled through intense fire for thirty minutes to reach the wounded man. Without an assistance, Private First Class Dickson carried the wounded man to a sheltered position from which he was evacuated to an aid station. Private First Class Dickson’s outstanding bravery under fire and disregard for his own safety reflect credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
