The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Robert W. Corrl (ASN: 33712869), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 10 April 1945, in the vicinity of Guthof, Germany. When two of the enemy assaulted Private Corrl’s machine gun position, he succeeded in wounding one with his pistol before the other kicked the weapon from his hand. In the hand-to-hand encounter which ensued, Private Corrl, although severely wounded, beat the German to death with his fists. In the meantime, the wounded enemy had seized Private Corrl’s pistol and attempted to fire at him. Wheeling around, Private Corrl grabbed the pistol and beat the German to death. The intrepidity with which Private Corrl performed this heroic act reflects credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
