The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class George W. Woodley (ASN: 32327269), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with the enemy while serving with the 563d Signal Company, 63d Infantry Division, on 9 May 1945, in the vicinity of Bad Mergantheim, Germany. While strolling along the bank of a stream Private First Class Woodley saw a little girl disappear beneath the surface. Her mother, sitting on the bank, became hysterical. Private First Class Woodley unhesitatingly dove in fully clothed to rescue the child. Although hampered by heavy clothing, he managed to bring the child to safety. Through his courage and quick action, the child’s life was saved. This heroic and hazardous action, in the face of imminent danger, reflects great credit upon Private First Class Woodley and is in keeping with the finest traditions of fidelity and courage.
