Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 247 (June 15, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Arthur Neuman (ASN: 20624397), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 19 March 1945, in the vicinity of Ensheim, Germany. During the regimental attack on the Siegfried Line, Company E was hit by an enemy counterattack supported by artillery. Despite the fact that enemy artillery and mortar fire was falling continuously on the position, Sergeant Neuman skillfully placed his machine gun and repulsed several enemy assaults on his position. Although wounded by enemy rocket fire, he continued to direct the fire of his assistant gunner until evacuated. Sergeant Neuman’s outstanding devotion to duty and his courage under fire reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
