Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 243 (June 14, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Warner F. Carlisle (ASN: 34796572), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 6 April 1945, in the vicinity of Buchhof, Germany. When his company was forced to withdraw from the town because of heavy losses, Private First Class Carlisle volunteered to remain behind with his machine gun. Without protecting riflemen, he continued firing at the oncoming enemy in the face of their concentrated fire, killing and wounding many of them. He withdrew only after running out of ammunition, meanwhile enabling the company to organize a new defensive position. Private First Class Carlisle’s courage and outstanding gallantry under fire reflect high credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
