The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Carvel Mullins (ASN: 33662261), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 8 April 1945, in the vicinity of Dorzbach, Germany. During an advance across a flat, open ridge, strong resistance was encountered from numerous enemy strong points, each consisting of several automatic weapons and snipers. Private First Class Mullins put his mortar in action under direct fire in an attempt to destroy the enemy strong points. When his observer was wounded, Private First Class Mullins moved his mortar forward in line with the foremost riflemen in order to facilitate direct observation. He made two direct hits on enemy machine gun positions and was adjusting fire on a third when he was killed by an artillery shell. Private First Class Mullins’ magnificent courage and disregard for his own safety saved the lives of many of his fellow soldiers and contributed greatly to the success of the operation. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
