The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Walter J. Selby, Jr. (ASN: 0-1048182), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 4 March 1945, in the vicinity of Bubingen, Germany. During an attack against fiercely held enemy positions, Lieutenant Selby rushed and crawled through intense enemy fire to hurl a grenade into a German machine gun position. With this gallant act to encourage them, Lieutenant Selby then led his men forward in a successful assault. Such courageous leadership and gallantry in action are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
