Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 242 (June 14, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Sergeant] Carl M. Mazzarelli (ASN: 32956286), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 2 April 1945, in the vicinity of Tiefenbach, Germany. During the attack on Tiefenbach, with utter disregard for his personal safety, Sergeant Mazzarelli made his way to a wounded soldier lying in an open street under heavy enemy fire. While he was dragging the wounded soldier towards safety, a machine gun fired upon him. He continued his efforts to rescue his comrade, despite bullets striking his helmet, until he himself was seriously wounded in the jaw and shoulder. His personal bravery was an inspiration to all who witnessed his action. His courage and gallantry under fire reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
