The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) William C. Lumpkin, Jr. (ASN: 0-394145), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery C, 861st Field Artillery Battalion, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 18 February 1945, in the vicinity of Auersmacher, Germany. In order to neutralize enemy fire being placed on positions of the 253d Infantry Regiment, Lieutenant Lumpkin, as forward observer, occupied an exposed position on a road 250 yards in front of friendly lines. The road was being used by enemy infantry and armor. With utter disregard for his personal safety, he adjusted artillery fire on enemy mortar positions, stopped several vehicles with small arms fire and killed or captured the members of the enemy patrol in a surprise encounter. His actions materially aided the infantry in holding its positions against the attacking enemy. The magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire of Lieutenant Lumpkin reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
