The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] John E. Bradley (ASN: 35927799), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 2 April 1945, in the vicinity of Hassmersheim, Germany. Without regard for his personal safety, Sergeant Bradley charged an enemy machine gun nest, killing two and compelling the remaining three enemy soldiers to surrender. His actions eliminated a threat to the company flank, allowing them to advance, and enabled medical aid to reach a wounded scout who had been lying in an exposed position. The courage and outstanding gallantry under fire of Sergeant Bradley reflect high credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
