The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Robert E. Adkins (ASN: 34140890), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 16 February 1945, in the vicinity of Hanweiler, Germany. Private Adkins, with utter disregard for his own safety, left his covered position in order to rescue, from the midst of a mine field, a soldier who had stepped on an anti-personnel mine. Private Adkins carried the wounded man through machine gun, mortar and small arms fire to a place where proper treatment could be given. The intrepidity with which Private Adkins performed this gallant act was an inspiration to all those who witnessed it. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
