The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Sergeant Archie J. Reid (ASN: 6822693), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with the enemy while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, on 1 April 1945, in the vicinity of Manneheim, Germany. A foot bridge over the Necker River collapsed as Company H was crossing and about thirty men were thrown into the icy water. Sergeant Reid managed to keep his balance on a floating section. He pulled three men from the swift current and took them to shore. There he found a boat and went downstream to save a fourth soldier. Sergeant Reid’s heroism saved four lives and reflects the greatest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
