The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Dillard H. Sherrill (ASN: 34775710), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 15 April 1945, in the vicinity of Dettingen, Germany. When his platoon was pinned down by enemy machine gun and machine pistol fire, Private First Class Sherrill, with utmost boldness and upon his own initiative, rushed the enemy positions. Although wounded in the attack, he killed two enemy, destroyed the machine gun, and captured the four remaining enemy. The courage and leadership of Private First Class Sherrill contributed greatly to the success of the attack. His bravery under hazardous conditions reflects the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
