Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 209 (June 3, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class William Edwards (ASN: 35906546), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 18 March 1945, in the vicinity of Ensheim, Germany. As leader of an assault team, Private First Class Edwards and his team advanced well beyond the leading elements of the company and through heavy enemy fire fought its way into the trenches between pillboxes. During the action, Private First Class Edwards and his group were cut off; but under his leadership, they repulsed several enemy counterattacks, captured eight prisoners, and held their position until the company joined them six hours later. The intrepidity with which Private First Class Edwards accomplished his mission was an inspiration to all those under him. The magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire of Private First Class Edwards reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
