The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Allen Hammett (ASN: 34376671), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 19 April 1945, in the vicinity of Steinbacle, Germany. During an attack on Steinbacle, Sergeant Hammett observed a wounded soldier lying in an area exposed to intense enemy mortar and sniper fire. Disregarding his personal safety, Sergeant Hammett summoned a medical aid man, crawled across open terrain to the wounded man and assisted in administering medical aid. This action was carried out despite being under continuous mortar and small arms fire during the entire period of about twenty minutes. The magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire Sergeant Hammett reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
