The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Abe W. Ensz (ASN: 37729358), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 19 May 1945, in the vicinity of Ensheim, Germany. During the assault by Company G, 2d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment on the Siegfried Line, Sergeant Ensz moved forward under enemy sniper fire, rocket launcher fire, and grenades, toward a strongly defended pillbox. While pointing out targets and covering other men in his party, he noticed four enemy in front of his lead man, who was out of grenades. He completely exposed himself in order to fire, killing one enemy and forcing the others to withdraw. Sergeant Ensz was killed in this action by sniper fire. The magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire of Sergeant Ensz reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
