The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] William R. Schultz (ASN: 15302184), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 7 April 1945, in the vicinity of Kressbach, Germany. Sergeant Schultz volunteered to return to a former defensive position of his platoon and rescued a wounded man who had been unable to move and was left behind. Under enemy observation and machine gun fire, he made his way to the wounded man and brought him back to the platoon. The magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire of Sergeant Schultz reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
