Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 197 (May 29, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Private First Class] Herschel J. Logan (ASN: 38599517), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 8 February 1945, in the vicinity of Sarreguemines, France. The company, having launched an attack, had succeeded in entering an enemy-held woods when Sergeant Logan observed an enemy machine gun section moving to the rear of his platoon. He, alone, left cover and boldly approached the enemy, using assault fire and bayonet. His action killed the leader and forced five of the enemy to surrender. The intrepidity with which Sergeant Logan performed this heroic act was an inspiration to all those who witnessed his action and reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
