The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) James R. Hyde (ASN: 0-1315173), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 17 March 1945, in the vicinity of Ensheim, Germany. While Company I was under a heavy enemy counterattack, Captain Hyde personally led his company in an attack despite intense mortar fire. His action on the enemy’s rear completely disorganized them and made it possible for Company I to secure their position. The skill of this maneuver and the violence with which it was carried out caught the enemy by complete surprise and resulted in a minimum of casualties for our troops. The magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire of Captain Hyde reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
