The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Thomas P. Tell (ASN: 36725552), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 753d Tank Battalion, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 15 March 1945, in the vicinity of Nietersheim, France. While supporting an infantry attack, Sergeant Tell moved his tank to an exposed position to provide the necessary supporting fire. He remained in this position, despite direct fire from an enemy anti-tank gun, until his tank was hit disabling the tank and wounding all five crew members. Disregarding his wounds, Sergeant Tell exposed himself to small arms fire, removed two of his crewmen from the tank, administered first aid, and remained with them until they could be evacuated under cover of darkness. The magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire of Sergeant Tell reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
