Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 136 (May 5, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Clarence B. Gerity (ASN: 16112520), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 8 April 1945, in the vicinity of Horbolzheim, Germany. Noting the disorganization in the rifle platoons due to the loss of their leaders, Sergeant Gerity voluntarily turned his mortar squad over to his assistant and went forward to take charge. He succeeded in organizing a small group of the company and reduced the enemy resistance. This prompt action and leadership enabled them to take their objective without further loss. The magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire of Sergeant Gerity reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
