The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Oliver C. Bacon (ASN: 42107229), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 8 April 1945, in the vicinity of Kressbach, Germany. When his platoon was forced to withdraw by enemy machine gun fire, Private Bacon covered its withdrawal with his automatic rifle. Although wounded several times and partially blinded, Private Bacon remained at his post and continued firing until the platoon was safe. The magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire of Private Bacon reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
