The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Alton C. O’Malley (ASN: 36766132), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery A, 861st Field Artillery Battalion, 63d Infantry Division, in action from 6 April 1945 to 7 April 1945, in the vicinity of Kressbach, Germany. During an attack by Company A, *** Infantry Regiment, Private First Class O’Malley was radio operator with a field artillery forward observer section. Although painfully injured and under continuous enemy fire, he rendered first aid to the wounded forward observer, carried a heavy radio and acted as both reconnaissance sergeant and radio operator until the completion of the action. The courage displayed by Private First Class O’Malley was an inspiration to all who witnessed his action and contributed greatly to the success of the attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
