The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Robert R. Hurd (ASN: 0-353003), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 862d Field Artillery Battalion, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 26 January 1945, in the vicinity of Jebsheim, France. When Company A, 254th Infantry Regiment, was held up by concentrated enemy machine gun, machine pistol, mortar, and artillery fire, Captain Hurd, acting as forward observer, moved forward to a burning mill from where he adjusted supporting artillery fire. For 24 hours he remained at his post in constant danger from both the burning building and the enemy fire. The intrepidity with which Captain Hurd performed this heroic act was an inspiration to all those who witnessed his action and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
