The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Leon J. Gillett (ASN: 36875813), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery B, 861st Field Artillery Battalion, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 8 April 1945, in the vicinity of Stein, Germany. During an attack, Corporal Gillett, as reconnaissance sergeant, exposed himself to intense enemy fire to relay fire commands from the forward observer to the radio operator. During this action, he was wounded and, while at the aid station, volunteered to help evacuate the wounded. While so engaged, he was again wounded. The magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire of Corporal Gillett reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
