The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Fred H. Menning (ASN: 35478660), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 692d Tank Destroyer Battalion, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 30 March 1945, in the vicinity of Neuenheim, Germany. Sergeant Menning commanded a platoon of tank destroyers which was given the mission of supporting the infantry in attacking Neuenheim, Germany. He determinedly led his platoon through hostile fire to successfully neutralize enemy strongpoints. During this action he was severely wounded but continued to direct the fire of his destroyers until relieved. The tenacity and fortitude exhibited by Sergeant Menning undoubtedly saved the lives of many men in the attack and enabled the infantry to accomplish its mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
