The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Ray H. Marchington (ASN: 19067990), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 7 March 1945, in the vicinity of Gudingen, Germany. Heeding cries for help from his assistant squad leader who had been severely wounded in an enemy mine field, Sergeant Marchington entered the mine field to give aid. In so doing, he stepped on an enemy mine, resulting in the loss of his foot. When assistance arrived, he pleaded with the rescuers to stay out of the field until it could be cleared. His entire actions reflect great credit upon himself and are commensurate with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
