The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Hugh C. Dunn (ASN: 37244502), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 3 March 1945, in the vicinity of Bubingen, Germany. Sergeant Dunn and his squad reached the near edge of a woods after coming up an exposed hill under intense enemy artillery and mortar fire. Upon reaching the woods, he unhesitatingly moved his squad, under enemy fire, through the woods to a forward position where they could best aid the attack. Although he had been hit by shrapnel, he directed the setting up of machine guns for flank protection during reorganization. Not until all the ground was secure from an attempted enemy counterattack did he consent to be evacuated, and even then he aided another wounded soldier to the rear. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
