The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Herbert E. Malone (ASN: 17013953), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 3 March 1945, in the vicinity of Hartungshof, Germany. Sergeant Malone made a courageous dash across fifty yards of open terrain under a heavy concentration of enemy small arms, mortar and artillery fire in an effort to eliminate enemy positions. With the aid of another soldier, Sergeant Malone made a final assault which resulted in the death of one enemy soldier and the capture of four. Later, he braved heavy fire to man a machine gun and kill an enemy machine gunner. His gallantry is in accord with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
