The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Francis J. Spiessbach (ASN: 0-1080243), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 24 February 1945, in the vicinity of Sarreguemines, France. Lieutenant Spiessbach, leader of the support platoon in an attack, was assigned the mission of protecting the left flank of the company. An enemy counterattack spearheaded by self-propelled guns and infantry developed. With utter disregard for his personal safety, Lieutenant Spiessbach exposed himself to heavy enemy fire in order to direct bazooka and small arms fire on the enemy onslaught. Although thrice wounded, he held his position and continued to direct fire, which resulted in repulsing the counterattack, giving time to complete reorganization of his company and to consolidate positions. His gallantry and outstanding determination to hold his position are exemplary of the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
