Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 79 (April 4, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Francis McGowan (ASN: 31466392), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on ;6 March 1945, in the vicinity of Bubingen, Germany. Enemy fire coming from a stone house pinned down the platoon of which Private First Class McGowan was a member. Without thought of his personal safety and in the face of heavy enemy fire, he charged across the open ground to the house, firing his BAR. Upon arrival he reloaded, entered the house and caused three of the enemy, although heavily armed and still firing upon out troops, to surrender. As a result of his courage, it was possible for the platoon to fulfill its mission and occupy high ground to support other friendly elements in the attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
