The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) James Gates (ASN: 0-1308943), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 17 February 1945, in the vicinity of Anersmacher, Germany. After the signal to attack was given and none of his men moved, Lieutenant Gates stood in the face of direct and intense enemy fire and led them in the attack. Although wounded and refusing medical attention until all other casualties had been given aid, he continued to lead the attack until completed and the defense against counterattack secured. His outstanding leadership is characteristic of the finest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
