The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Francis Muncey (ASN: 39925531), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 24 February 1945, in the vicinity of Kelinblittersdorf, Germany. Private First Class Muncey, a member of a platoon in an attack which was halted by a schu-mine field, took charge of and led his platoon across the mine field, despite the knowledge of probable consequences and intense enemy fire. His outstanding heroism and leadership contributed greatly to the successful completion of the platoon’s mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
