The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private George S. Clausen (ASN: 37549616), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 263d Engineer Combat Battalion, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 25 February 1945, in the vicinity of Bliesbulchen, Germany. Operating one of four six-man reconnaissance boats, Private Clausen was returning infantrymen from a raiding party when intense enemy fire caused his boat to capsize, destroying two others and forcing the occupants to swim ashore. Thoroughly wet, he commandeered the only remaining boat and aided in removing the casualties, towing the boat to a guy-line which crossed the river. Alone and with paddles, wounded in the leg, and under intense enemy fire, he pulled the boat hand-over-hand on the guy line to the enemy shore, effecting the safe return of four infantrymen. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
