The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Marvin O. Breeding (ASN: 0-529811), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, 863d Field Artillery Battalion, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 3 March 1945, in the vicinity of Gudingen, Germany. Lieutenant Breeding commanded an artillery forward observer party which accompanied an infantry company on an attack. The infantry received intense enemy artillery, mortar and small arms fire. During this intense fire, one of Lieutenant Breeding’s men was wounded by a shell fragment. He exposed himself to the heavy fire to obtain aid for the wounded man; then returned to the vicinity of the command post and advanced with the infantry until they were stopped again by intense fire. He adjusted fire on the enemy infantry and self-propelled guns which were counterattacking and assisted in repelling the counterattack by his adjustments of artillery fire. His courage exemplifies the finest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
