The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Air Corps) Harry L. Barr (ASN: 0-421583), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Spitfire type aircraft of the 309th Fighter Squadron. On 7 December 1943 while flying in a six-plane patrol over the front lines near Atina, Italy, twelve ME-109’s and FW-190’s were sighted as they prepared to attack our ground forces. With Captain Barr and his wingman flying as top cover, the four remaining Spitfires intercepted the enemy attackers. Observing two ME-109’s pursuing his unprotected leader, Captain Barr dived to the attack, shot down one of the enemy fighters and enabled his comrade to evade the other. Displaying outstanding tactical ability, Captain Barr then so skillfully covered his flight that the Spitfires destroyed five ME-109’s, probably destroyed a sixth and seriously damaged another. All of our aircraft returned safely. His steadfast devotion to duty and superior proficiency as a combat pilot reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
