The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Samuel A. Gosnell (ASN: 33733983), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, on 22 September 1944 in France. When the enemy launched a counterattack with tanks, supported by infantry under cover of a dense fog, Private Gosnell and one volunteer went in search of the tanks armed with a rocket launcher. Following the sound of the vehicles they advanced in the face of enemy machine gun and small arms fire and destroyed one enemy tank, returning to their unit uninjured. The exemplary courage and aggressiveness displayed by Private Gosnell reflect highest credit on himself and the armed forces of the United States.
