The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Senior Master Sergeant John James White, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Pope Air Force Base, North Carolina, on 23 March 1994. On that date, he observed smoke and flames at the paratroop staging area as a result of being struck by a crippled and pilotless F-16, which had impacted the Pope Air Force Base ramp. He ran toward the area and encountered a badly burned paratrooper and put him behind a wall to protect him from secondary explosions that were occurring and proceeded to administer first aid. He pulled six more injured soldiers behind the protective wall until make shift stretchers could carry them to nearby vehicles. Sergeant White continued to move debris and disabled vehicles from the impact area, with complete disregard to the smoke, intense heat and exploding 20-millimeter ordnance, to facilitate the evacuation of additional wounded. He proceeded to help clear an area to allow the landing of a MH-60 AirEvac helicopter that was hovering overhead. He remained on the scene assisting the walking wounded to a safe area until transportation arrived and extinguishing spot fires. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Sergeant White reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
