The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Wilbur Salisbury (ASN: 39463959), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 29 December 1944, while serving with Company E, 329th Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in ****. In the course of an attack designated to relieve intense enemy pressure on another unit, Company E was pinned down by extremely heavy machine gun, 20-mm. And tank fire. Realizing the vital importance of keeping the attack under way, Private Salisbury and two other enlisted men volunteered to act as scouts for the lead platoon. Completely disregarding their own safety they proceeded across woody and hilly terrain and through a heavy fog and found a route of advance for the company. As they neared the town the lead man was killed by fire from a well-concealed enemy machine gun. With heroic courage, Private Salisbury and the other man continued on their important mission and had advanced only a few steps when they too were killed. The conspicuous initiative, personal bravery and devotion to duty of this enlisted man reflect the highest credit upon himself and exemplify the finest traditions of the armed forces of the United States.
